Human Medications Treat Our Pets Too!

Human Medications Treat Our Pets Too!

Did you know that veterinarians often prescribe human medications to pets? There are many human medications that are safe for use in our furry family members too. Anything from anti-depressants to antibiotics can be prescribed and picked up at a regular pharmacy for your pets.

Antibiotics such as Cephalexin and Clindamycin are human drugs used to treat skin and urinary tract infections in our pets. Prozac and Xanax are commonly used to treat anxiety disorders in dogs and cats. Even Viagra is prescribed for pets with heart disease! All of these and many more human drugs can be used in animals to treat their various ailments.

Although many human medications are used to treat animals, always check with a Telepaws veterinarian before giving any medications to your pet. Some human drugs can be extremely toxic to our pets such as Aspirin and Tylenol.

TelePAWS is now offering a subscription plan at just $20 per month. This includes 5 calls annually. We look forward to helping you provide the best care for your pet through high-quality online veterinary care at Telepaws. Thank you for putting your loved ones in our care!

Dog Diarrhea: Can an Online Vet Help?

Dog Diarrhea: Can an Online Vet Help?

It happens to everyone at some point. The dog gets diarrhea. Why not use an online vet to get your dog the help it needs? The veterinarians at TelePAWS are available to help you get your furry friend back to normal quickly.

Online Vets Can Treat Your Dog’s Diarrhea Quickly

If your pet has very watery diarrhea, blood in the stool, loss of appetite, or lethargy, they need care sooner than later. Waiting too long can result in dehydration, a painful abdomen, and worsening of symptoms. Contact us when you see the first signs of loose stools in order to get ahead of it before it turns into a more serious issue.

Online Vets Can Help Determine the Cause of Your Dog’s Diarrhea

There are many reasons that dogs develop diarrhea. Getting into the trash or eating material that doesn’t belong in the GI tract will result in loose stools. Other causes include viral or bacterial infections, parasites, food allergies, and even stress.

Recurring diarrhea can be a sign of something more serious like inflammatory bowel disease, liver or kidney disease, or cancer. It is important that you consult with a veterinarian whenever your pet is not feeling well.

Trust an Online Vet to Give the Best Advice For Your Dog

Home treatments like feeding bland food such as chicken and rice can be helpful, but many times this will not be enough to get your dog back to having normal feces. Never give your dog over-the-counter diarrhea medications made for people without first consulting with a veterinarian. Some of these drugs can be harmful to them.

An online vet may be able to prescribe medications to help ease the symptoms of diarrhea and get your dog back to his normal self within a couple of days. (See NOTE below) Medications can include antibiotics, probiotics, specialized foods, and other anti-diarrheals. Which medication is chosen depends upon the severity of the symptoms and the cause of the diarrhea.

NOTE: Many states do not allow online prescriptions.

Dog Worms: Can an Online Vet Help?

Dog Worms: Can an Online Vet Help?

What should you do if you see a worm in your dog’s stool? Have you thought about calling your trusted online vet? The veterinarians at TelePAWS are able to answer your questions and help you deal with this issue.

A Word About Worms

There are many types of worms, also called intestinal parasites, which can infect dogs. Roundworms, Hookworms, Tapeworms and Whipworms are the most common ones seen. These parasites are picked up when dogs eat a dead animal or feces of an infected animal.

They can also get infected by licking their paws after walking through an area of grass where an infected animal has defecated. Puppies commonly have worms and need to be treated several times as they are growing to rid them of these pests.

Symptoms of Dog Worms and How Online Vets Can Help

Symptoms of these parasites include loose stools or diarrhea, vomiting, bloating of the abdomen, and weight loss. Tapeworms are typically found in the stool of dogs that have no other symptoms. These worms look like grains of rice and can be easily detected.

If you are concerned about how your dog is feeling and think they may have worms, set up an appointment with an online vet. The online veterinarians can help determine if your pet needs treatment and can suggest medications appropriate for your situation.

NOTE: Many states do not allow online prescriptions.

What You Can Do To Help Your Dog

When your pet is diagnosed with worms, be sure to pick up feces quickly. Leaving it to sit in the grass will cause reinfection in your pet. Some of the same parasites that infect our pets can be passed on to people, so be sure to wash your hands after picking up feces and after petting your pets. Children are especially susceptible to getting the same parasites that our dogs carry.

Most intestinal parasites are prevented by keeping your pet on regular heartworm preventatives year-round. For pets that tend to eat dead animals, they should be regularly dewormed additionally. To prevent tapeworms, your pet should be maintained on a high-quality flea preventative, as dogs typically get these worms from eating fleas.

An Online Vet Will Be Able To Help Your Dog With Worms

Instead of stressing your pet further by taking them to the veterinary clinic, our online vets are available to assist you with their worm issue. Your dog can receive treatments for their worms without the hassle or long wait to see your regular veterinarian.

Rely on the veterinarians at TelePAWS if you suspect your pet may have worms. We will be happy to answer your questions and suggest appropriate treatments if needed. We are here to help any day of the week and any time of the day.

Urination in the House: Not Always a Training Issue

Is your adult dog or cat urinating inappropriately in your house?  This can be a sign of a medical problem rather than a loss of house-training.  Before you call a trainer, the best course of action is to make an appointment with your TelePAWS veterinarian.

Inappropriate urination can be caused by many different things.  Most commonly, dogs and cats get urinary tract infections caused by bacterial contamination of the urinary tract.  Some older pets can have kidney disease leading to an increase in thirst which results in excessive urination, sometimes in the house.  Other causes include Cushing’s disease, diabetes, bladder stones, prostate problems, crystals in the urine, kidney infections, urinary incontinence, and bladder cancer.

The treatment of urination in the house varies depending upon what is the cause.  Many pets are put on antibiotics to clear an infection, some are treated through a diet change, and others need to pursue surgery to remove stones.  No matter what the cause, our veterinarians are able to direct you towards the appropriate steps in relieving the symptoms.

Urinating inappropriately is frustrating for pet owners.  The veterinarians at TelePAWS are here to help you with this problem.  Whether your pet is urinating secondary to an infection, bladder stones, or behavioral issues, we will be able to determine the best tests and treatments going forward to get your pet back to normal.
